Set in a malaria-free area in the historic North West province, near the border with Botswana, the 76 000 hectare (187 800 acre) Madikwe Game Reserve supports a diverse combination of bushveld and the semi-arid Kalahari. Madikwe is famed for Operation Phoenix, the world’s largest game translocation exercise. Established almost 20 years ago, the reserve successfully reintroduced more than 8 000 animals of 28 species, including lion, elephant and buffalo, as well as black and white rhino. This area is now home to the famous Big Five, as well as the endangered African wild dog and 350 bird species.
Madikwe Game Reserve On arrival at Johannesburg International Airport, you will collect your rental car and self drive to the Madikwe Game Reserve, about a 4 hour drive. Arrive at Madikwe Safari Lodge and enjoy a late afternoon game drive. The next few days are spent viewing, photographing and experiencing the wonders of the Madikwe Game Reserve.
After your morning game drive and breakfast, depart back to Johannesburg.
At Madikwe Safari Lodge, the days are designed to thrill you with intimate wildlife encounters and the nights to delight you with the indulgence and romance of Africa.
Morning Game Drive
As dawn breaks over the African bush, a gentle tap on your door will wake you to the delights of a new day. Your ranger will discuss what you hope to see that day over fragrant tea or coffee and morning biscuits or rusks. Explore the semi-arid landscape in an open 4×4 safari vehicle in the company of the ranger, who will attempt to track the rare African wild dog or the Big Five.
Return to the Lodge for a delicious breakfast, with platters of fruit and cheese followed by a selection of hot breakfast dishes. Choose from eggs, oats, waffles or a number of other options.
Lunch is served on expansive decks overlooking the game-filled plains.
Cool off with a refreshing dip in your private plunge pool or indulge in an afternoon siesta. Over a late afternoon tea, your ranger will chat about what he had planned for the afternoon game drive.
Evening Game Drive
This game drive begins in the late afternoon and lasts until after dark, when spotlights are used for a glimpse into the nocturnal bush life. Track brown hyena as they call to each other on an evening hunt or catch a glimpse of a predator getting ready for its nightly hunt. Enjoy sundowners in a scenic location as the sun slowly sinks beneath the horizon.
Return to the Lodge for a mouthwatering dinner around a blazing fire in the boma with newfound friends. Linger over dessert and cognac or retire to the warm fireplace in your own suite.
