Self-drive touring is such a personalized experience, so we are only putting a couple of examples onto our site as a guide for those who prefer to drive themselves around our country. We would arrange vehicle hire, advise you on your routes and can book all your en-route lodging, as well as any activities you may require. Cape Town and Garden Route Self-Drive Tour (9 days)

Day 1, The Commodore Hotel, V&A Waterfront
On arrival in Cape Town you will be met by our representative, who will assist you with your rental car. You start the day with a trip to the top of Table Mountain for beautiful views over the Mother City. Once back at the base you take a walk through the Company’s Gardens with a visit to the SA Museum and St. Georges Cathedral. Spend some time at the Green Market Square flea markets, the perfect place to buy curios and gifts for those back home. View some of the colourful houses of the Cape Malay people who have settled here before you check in at your hotel at the famous Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.

Day 2, The Commodore Hotel, V&A Waterfront
Do the Cape Peninsula Tour, driving via Platinum Mile, to the picturesque harbour village of Hout Bay. Visit Mariner's Wharf and then continue to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve via the famous Chapman’s Peak Drive. Take the Funicular trip to the top of Cape Point for breathtaking coastal views. On your way back toward Cape Town enjoy a seafood lunch at the Black Marlin Restaurant just outside of Simon’s Town. After lunch visit the Penguin Colony at Boulders and end off your day at Groot Constantia, the oldest wine estate in the Cape.

Day 3, The Coach House, Franschhoek
Drive out of Cape Town into the beautiful Cape Winelands. We recommend travelling out along the National Route N2 to Stellenbosch. The Spier Estate is well worth a visit and you could enjoy a cellar tour and wine tasting at the Neethlingshof Wine Estate before continuing into Stellenbosch. Wander through the oak lined streets and browse in the many antique shops and art galleries or visit the Village Museum to learn more about life in the 18th & 19th century. From here your journey takes you across the Helshoogte Pass to Franschhoek. There are a number of wine estates en route including Tokara, Boschendal and Allee Bleu. Your hotel is situated at the entrance to the town.

Day 4, The Coach House, Franschhoek
After breakfast explore Franschhoek and its’ surrounding winelands. Travel to the top of the Franshhoek Pass and enjoy the view, explore the vineyards or enjoy a wine tour

Day 5, Oue Werf, Oudtshoorn
Today you bid farewell to the Winelands and your journey takes you across the mountains into what is know as the Little Karoo. Travel along the Route 62 through charming country towns and hauntingly beautiful countryside. In Calitzdorp you could stop for some Port on the Boplass Estate before continuing to Oudtshoorn the ostrich capitol of South Africa. Your guesthouse is on a working ostrich farm. Perhaps visit one of the show farms to learn more about these curious flightless birds before checking in. Enjoy a sundowner on the veranda followed by dinner where you have the opportunity to try some ostrich meat.

Day 6, Oue Werf, Oudtshoorn
Today explore Oudtshoorn and visit the famous Cango Caves or the Cango Wildlife Ranch with its crocodiles and endangered wild cats before making your way across the Outeniqua Mountains to George and drive to Knysna and enjoy a sunset cruise on the Knysna Lagoon before dinner at one of the excellent restaurants at the Knysna Waterfront.

Day 7, Woodbury Lodge, Safari
Today you make your way through the Tsitsikamma forest and on to the Sunshine coast of Port Elizabeth. Your Journey takes you further into the Eastern Cape and the Amakhala Game Reserve where you book into Woodbury Lodge for a Safari Experience where all the “Big 5” roam free. After freshening up embark on your first game drive in an open vehicle. On your return to the lodge dinner awaits you.

Day 8, Woodbury Lodge, Safari
Early morning is probably the best time for game viewing in Africa and so you will have to rise early today and embark on a game drive in search of Africa’s Wildlife. On your return to the lodge a scrumptious breakfast awaits you. Relax at the lodge during the heat of the day before enjoying another game drive in the evening.

Day 9
Depart Woodbury Lodge after breakfast and travel to Port Elizabeth to explore the town and catch your connecting flight home.
