Motswiri Camp is a small tented camp located in the far west of the Selinda Reserve. Built on the banks of the meandering Selinda Spillway, it is 70 km as the crow flies, or a two or three hour drive to Selinda and Zarafa Camps, respectively. The annual arrival of the Okavango Delta's floodwaters in the plains outside camp brings with it a myriad birdlife and wildlife. Rekindling the ambience of the original Botswana tented safari camp; Motswiri Camp enchants and romances with its sophisticated simplicity. The camp consists of just four East African Meru tents positioned on the ground. This remote corner of Botswana is available only to private groups who reserve the camp in its entirety. Motswiri Camp then becomes twice the prize, when not only is it in remotest Africa, but it is only shared among friends.
Accommodation
Styled in the spirit of Botswana's original tented safari camps, the spacious custom designed Meru tents rest at ground level, tucked under ancient leadwood trees. Shaded private verandahs peer onto the Selinda Spillway and its forested banks beyond. Each tent is furnished to take care of a guest's every need with a simplicity that is unpretentious yet comfortable. Each of the four tents is furnished with two high quality, three-quarter beds, comfortably layered with fine cotton linen. These can be joined to create one large king bed. The outdoor bathrooms are en suite and accessed through the rear of the tent. An open air shower, flush toilet, vanity basin, and plenty of hot and cold water complete the amenities. Motswiri Camp can accommodate private groups of up to 6 (or possibly 8) guests.
Camp Description
Motswiri Camp is centered on a traditional 'mess' tent. Here, the intimate lounge is paired with a private dining area, further enhancing the exclusive ambience of this camp. Complementing the 'mess' is an open-air bar and boma (campfire area) with views over the Spillway. Folks gather here for glass of chilled wine before dinner, or afternoon tea prior to the evening's adventure. When the floodwaters recede (October to May), Motswiri Camp's signature waterhole and its sunken hide provide some interesting sightings at close quarters. All refreshments, estate wines, soft drinks, mineral water, local beverages and beer are included.
Facilities/Activities
At Motswiri Camp there is no routine per se. The wildlife knows the most forgiving times of day, and we take its lead. Early morning, late afternoon and evenings are the prime time – it's when the colors are vibrant, the sun is low and spirits are up. Setting out at dawn, when predators are active, our guides are as keen as the guests to discover the riches of each day at in Selinda Reserve. Usually, once the sun is high and strong, we retreat with the herds to our mid-day resting post, Motswiri Camp. Then, as the sun begins to wane again, we're off for the late afternoon to evening, searching for nocturnal wildlife and the action that comes with sunset. But nothing is regimented. Regimens don't suit Motswiri, which is why we all love being out here in the first place. Our 4×4 vehicles are rugged and provide access to all of the Selinda Reserve's diverse ecosystems, and do so with ease. Short walks from camp with our fully qualified guides are offered as well. Arrangements can be made with management on site, but it is recommended that if this activity needs to be guaranteed, that it is arranged in advance by a safari planner.
